Sainsbury’s intends to expand it’s superstore, destroying an ancient woodland habitat and causing significant loss of wildlife.

Amazing Grace is concerned for the ever-decreasing corners that hedgehogs are squeezed into. Development and habitat loss are the most important factors impacting wildlife decline. Whilst other issues cause them problems, without a safe place to nest, rest, forage and drink they simply cannot survive.  We work tirelessly with developers to find a suitable, sustainable space for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs like Grace have recently been included in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List for British Mammals; they are fast heading toward extinction. Extinction is forever, and we must do all that we can to prevent it!

This development will remove vital habitat for hedgehogs and the invertebrates that they feed on. There must be an alternative. After all that has happened this year, we should be aware that we all need to change and support our very fragile environment. We are destroying our children’s future. This habitat has already been used in mitigation and should not be used again. 

We accept Sainsbury’s need to expand their online service due to a shift in demand. We want Sainsbury’s to survive and thrive, but we also want hedgehogs in that area to be safe. A suitable environment is key to this – there is always a way to share space with Grace while embracing a dynamic future.

We are calling for Sainsbury’s to halt this development until a suitable, sustainable solution can be found for both Sainsbury’s and the Burpham hedgehogs. Sainsbury’s as a company was lucky enough to have grown through Covid with the support of the community, so we are asking that they look to support the hedgehogs and the community that love their humble hogs by not removing this vital habitat.
