Compost heaps are ideal places for Grace to make a nest and rear her young.

Take care when turning the heap; one thrust of a fork can easily kill more than one baby hedgehog. Compost heaps are warm and cosy, they make the perfect nesting and hibernation site and are full of food. It doesn’t get much better for Grace!

The safest time to spread the heap is probably late October when most babies have left their mum and adults have not yet started to hibernate, but still check carefully for any that may be there.

Partly used bags of compost may also have nesting hedgehogs in them, so please check when removing or dumping them.
